To continue the fun exercise of producing alternative versions of Batman, I decided to cross into the universe of Warhammer 40k. Although not a fan of Warhammer 40k, I do appreciate some of the designs and associated artwork. Also, to my surprise and like my Mobile Suit Batman (Gundam), I couldn’t find any half-decent attempts of a Batman Assault Marine.
I selected the Assault Marine for the reason of basing the design on what is essentially a human being in a flight-capable armor suit, something fitting to the Dark Knight. The challenge was to produce something which is recognizable as a hi-tech Batsuit and an Assault Marine but not too close to existing designs from both universes.
I tried to steer away from designs found in the Night Lords and the Raven Guard with their blatantly obvious wings, instead opting for something relatively subtle and not overtly bat-like. The helmet with its “face-guard” has a vague Chaos influence (since Batman operates outside the established system) and even Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. At the same time, I tried to avoid existing Batsuit designs, such as the exo-suit found in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Since I am not an expert in either fictional universe, I have probably ended up inadvertently ripping off something anyway. Intentionally or otherwise, there is also influence from mecha anime such as Gundam and Macross.
Given the abovementioned conflicting considerations, I am mostly happy with the result even if, in the absolute sense, the design is ordinary (i.e. just another big guy in armor).
